The Gibson J-40 from the early 1970s is a square-shoulder dreadnought acoustic guitar constructed with a spruce top and mahogany back and sides, producing the balanced voice characteristic of Gibson acoustics from this era. The body measures in the dreadnought style with a black single-ply top and back binding, giving it a refined visual presentation. A black teardrop pickguard and multi-ring soundhole rosette complement the natural finish commonly seen on this model. The neck is made from mahogany with a set-in construction and a 25 1/2-inch scale length. It is topped with a rosewood fingerboard inlaid with simple dot markers and bound along the edges. The nut width is approximately 1 11/16 inches, making it comfortable for a range of playing styles. Originally outfitted with Gibsons standard tuners of the era, this example has been modified with Sperzel tuning machines for enhanced stability. Other appointments include a rosewood bridge with a string-through saddle and traditional Gibson headstock shape with the gold script logo. The instruments construction reflects Gibsons early to mid-1970s production period, where square-shoulder dreadnoughts like the J-40 offered players an accessible yet professional-grade acoustic model.
